Mixed Media

Animation & Fashion collaborative Mixed Media Project (2023)

For our 2022 Mixed Media project, students from BA Animation teamed up with Fashion & Textiles students to created a variety of short animations based around objects that they had picked at random. Each group had only four short days to finish their films, and we're all really impressed with what they had managed to create in such a short period of time.

We the animators and the fashion students learned a lot about each other’s crafts during the mixed media project, and I’m really looking forward to future collabs.

“The mixed media project was spontaneous and exiting, having a short period of time to create a small film really pushed our work to be highly creative and fun, especially without the pressure that it had to be amazing”

Weird & Wonderful Creatures Project (2022)

To kick off 2022 and the start of a new year of animation, we created our Weird & Wonderful Creatures project. This project involved our students breaking off into teams of three or four, and working together to create a unique, weird character, a bio, and three short animations featuring their character over a live action video. Students only had five days to completed their group projects and we encouraged the use of mixed-media with this project, meaning students were welcome to experiment with various animation techniques, such as stop-motion, hand drawn or digital. At the end of the week long project, we handed out prizes to students who we felt went above and beyond with both their character designs and animations.

Weird & Wonderful Creatures Film (2022)

The Weird & Wonderful Creatures movie combines all of our second year students animations into one exceptionally creative film. Each individual student brought a unique design, character or animation style to their films, which shows the diverse range of talent at Middlesex University.

Student Statements

I personally really enjoyed the challenge of doing something in a short amount of time. It was really fun quickly coming up with an idea with my team and building upon it as we moved on. And I think in the end we made something really simple yet special. Additionally, I really liked the freedom of creativity this project allowed us. It gave me an opportunity to design a weird character and animate it however I liked Sena Hatice Balkan
